India’s Maritime Sector Emerges as Engine of Unmatched Growth, Slashes Turnaround Time to 49 Hours
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlights India's maritime transformation, noting a record 915 Metric Tonnes of cargo handling and a reduction in turnaround time to 49 hours. The sector has evolved into an engine of growth over 12 years through Sagarmala, shifting focus toward ecosystem development to power trade, connectivity, and livelihoods.
The Minister revealed critical operational advancements, noting that port turnaround time has been dramatically slashed from 96 hours in 2014 to just 49 hours. This surge in efficiency is complemented by a 7-fold increase in inland water cargo and a record-breaking 915 Metric Tonnes of cargo handling achieved within the last financial year.
Administratively, India’s maritime journey reflects a fundamental shift from mere infrastructure creation to comprehensive ecosystem development. By successfully combining scale, efficiency, and inclusivity, the sector is currently powering international trade, generating vital livelihoods, and strengthening national connectivity.
